Rachel Maddow on MRGO and its Role in the Drowning of New Orleans

Map of MRGO

Last night, Friday, August 27, Rachel Maddow devoted her program to Louisiana’s coastal wetlands and the role MRGO, a navigation channel constructed in the 1960s to shortcut the trip between the Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans. It didn’t work and ships continued to use the Mississippi River. Her interview with Dr. Ivor van Heerden is spot on.

In the next segment she interviewed NBC’s environmental reporter, Ann Thompson, who explained the importance of Louisiana’s coastal wetlands to Louisiana’s fishing industry. In less than two minutes Thompson defined the work of Louisiana’s wetlands.
