If you can’t tase them, and you can’t eat them, well shoot them: The new Illinois solution to the Asian Carp

Two carp and a Blue Gill in a borrow pit

If you can’t tase the carp with an electronic net  on the Chicago Sanitary and Shipping Canal; if you can’t eat the carp or send it to China, where it is a delicacy; if you can’t get it to wash into a borrow pit in a flood and die there; then shoot the carp.

The State of Illinois would rather not close the Chicago Sanitary and Shipping Canal to keep carp out of Lake Michigan, so the legislature keeps coming up with alternative solutions. The latest: shoot the carp when it leaps out of the water.

Illinois Representative Dave Winters (R-Shirland) wants to allow anglers to shoot the carp beginning in 2013.

  1. Oh, dear. I know what it’s like down here on holidays when you combine boats, beer and fishing line. I can only imagine….

I understand it’s a serious problem, and that people are trying to be creative. But I fear the death toll with this one would include more than carp.
